Comedians Using AI in NYC!

ChatGPT is not funny—or is it?

ComedyBytes, a group of comedians who call themselves an “A.I. comedy collective,” is throwing AI improv shows and rap battles in NYC.

I’m buying tickets ASAP.

This isn’t just a random collection of AI nerds either. The group features comedians who have been on HBO, Comedy Central, and more.

“We use ChatGPT to generate and curate roast jokes. Not all of them are perfect, but I’d probably say maybe 10 to 20 percent of them make it to the show,” explained founder Eric Doyle.

  1. Round 1 is humans roasting machines and machines roasting humans

  2. Round 2 is human comedians roasting AI celebrities and vice versa

  3. Round 3 is human comedians versus an AI version of him or herself

It got a lot more personal than I thought — not in a bad way, but I was not expecting it to be so pointed. There was a lot of like, “Your code isn’t even that good.” I’m like, “Oh, man, that was spicy.” I’ll be the first to say that I discredited a lot of the A.I. innovations.

Eric Doyle, New York Times

Doyle and his team use AI tools like:

  • Midjourney to make funny images

  • Wonder Dynamics for music videos

  • ElevenLabs for AI comedian voices,

  • D-ID to generate avatar faces

They’ve been pleasantly surprised at who has been coming to the shows too. “We are seeing some tech folks; some folks in the venture capital world who are working in A.I. or investing in A.I. by day come to the shows out of curiosity,” said Doyle.

Well, next time I’m in NYC, I’m there!

And the Grammy goes to AI… NOT

Bad news for AI Drake fans.

AI Drake will not be winning any Grammys this year.

Last month, the Recording Academy announced that “Only human creators” could win the Grammy. That being said, music with AI help can WIN.

Here’s a quote from the Recording Academy’s CEO and President.

"Here's the super easy, headline statement: AI, or music that contains AI-created elements is absolutely eligible for entry and for consideration for Grammy nomination. Period. What's not going to happen is we are not going to give a Grammy or Grammy nomination to the AI portion."

Harvey Mason Jr., CEO and President of Recording Academy

Some more fine points:

  • If an AI or voice modelling program performs the lead vocal on a song, the track would be eligible in a songwriting category, for example, but not a performance category, because "what is performing is not human creation," he explained.

  • "Conversely, if a song was sung by an actual human in the studio, and they did all the performing, but AI wrote the lyric or the track, the song would not be eligible in a composition or a songwriting category."

  • "As long as the human is contributing in a more than de minimis amount, which to us means a meaningful way, they are and will always be considered for a nomination or a win”

"We don't want to see technology replace human creativity,” said Mason. “We want to make sure technology is enhancing, embellishing, or additive to human creativity. So that's why we took this particular stand in this award cycle."

While AI Drake fans like myself are disappointed, this does make sense.
