Google Reveals Text-to-Music AI

AI music is hot right now. So hot that record labels are sending cease & desists to my friendsā€™ AI music websites šŸ˜‚

But donā€™t worry AI music fans. Google just opened up access to its text-to-music AI called MusicLM. The tool can turn text descriptions into music. Just write ā€œsoulful jazz for a dinner partyā€ and boom youā€™ve got your own song for your next dinner party.

The difference between Googleā€™s MusicLM and the AI music thatā€™s been floating around the web is that Googleā€™s tool doesnā€™t generate music with specific artistsā€™ vocals. Sorry no Google AI Drake anytime soon.

Without the clout coming from famous artists, itā€™s hard to say whether any of the music on Googleā€™s MusicLM will pop off like AI Drake did. Meanwhile, you might remember that cyberpunk artist Grimes told Twitter that producers can get 50% of royalties if they make music with an AI version of her.

Well, the incentives worked. ā€œThe bangers are starting to roll in,ā€ said Grimes. Hereā€™s a few of the best AI Grimes I found:

So many bangers are being produced that Grimes said, ā€œI am actually kinda stressed that ppl r starting to make competitively (or maybe better??) quality grimes sounding songs than I do but it's also the most wonderfully poetic way to die and respawn in another career.ā€

Will Googleā€™s MusicLM create any bangers? Will Grimes turn into an open-source AI music project? Who knows, this is AI! Anything can happen.

Director Baz Luhrmann Doesnā€™t Think AI Will Take His Job

Baz Luhrmann sits on stage talking to a robot painter named Ai-Da. Itā€™s just another day in New York City in 2023.

ā€œI am not afraid of AI,ā€ he said. He then clarified heā€™s not fearful of AI taking his job as a director, but heā€™s definitely scared of AI destroying the world. šŸ˜®

ā€œArtists, to a person, are generally self-medicating flaws and chaos within them [by making art]. The thing AI just doesnā€™t have at the center of it is random chaos. Emotion.ā€

Baz Luhrmann, WIRED

Despite this, many in the industry are scared of AI taking their jobs. Itā€™s been a huge debate in the current writerā€™s strike. ā€œThereā€™s understandable fear because when you get this massive change, thereā€™s going to be things caught in the crossfire,ā€ Luhrmann says.

But going back to his Elvis movie, he says, ā€œAustin Butler did not do an impersonation. What he did was Austin Butlerā€™s interpretation of the soul of Elvis Presley. An AI can impersonate, it canā€™t interpret.ā€

Is he planning on using AI in his work anytime soon? Well, he actually already did it ā€” he used AI to fade Butlerā€™s face into Presleyā€™s.

As the saying goes, ā€œAI wonā€™t take your job. Someone using AI better than you will.ā€ Pay attention, the best of the best are using AI in all kinds of cool ways.

AI Kernels

Hereā€™s a round-up of interesting news and stories that caught our attention this week:

Google releases Magic Editor for photos. Googleā€™s new magic editor lets you reimagine your photos with AI. Drag and drop people around and watch AI fill in the missing area šŸ¤Æ ā†’ Google Blog

Want to search through movie stills/screenshots? I just found a new tool dubbed ā€œthe search engine for creative peopleā€. Find the perfect image for you to express your ideas and be more efficient in your creative process.ā†’ Flim.ai

Create childrenā€™s stories with AI. Generate a story about your child with your family as characters ā€” add a genre, style, and more. This is unbelievably cool. Could kids be getting personalized movies soon too? ā†’ Bedtimestory.ai

AI-Themed Content of the Week

Every week, weā€™ll hit you with a piece of content centered around AI. It might be a book, movie, whatever.

Life 3.0 is one of the craziest books I ever read. The intro will blow your mind.

The book is by an MIT scientist, and is all about artificial general intelligence (AGI) and what the future looks like.
